During His life on earth, Christ forgave sinners in His own name and by His own authority. Before ascending to His Father in Heaven, He wanted to confer that power on His apostles and their successors in the priesthood. This power is still excercised by Catholic priests today in the Sacrament of Confession which is one of the greatest gifts given to us by God. Throughthis sacrament, our sins are forgiven if we confess them in kind and number to the priests as best we can, have true contrition and a purpose of ammendment. The priest then gives absolution which forgives us of our sins. No man, by his own power and authority, could possibly forgive sins. Only God can do that because sin is an offense against Him. But the priest, as God's representative, can forgive sins because God has given him the power to do so.
Let us make frequent use of this gift of God's mercy especially so we can recieve Our Lord Jesus in Holy Communion worthily! Confessions are heard in the Principal Church of our parish on Saturday at 7:00pm. Confessions can also be heard, of course, through appointments made with our priests.
